The new boat and how a small fundraiser became a great success.

An acquaintance's plan to travel to Zanzibar spontaneously gave birth to the idea of a small fundraiser. And it was a big success!

Cake-fundraiser Zurich Insurance

With their cake sales campaign before Christmas, a crew of employees from Zurich Insurance with support of the Zurich Foundation collected around CHF 10,000 for marinecultures. This was a huge surprise for us as we had no idea the fundraiser was going to happen!

The entire marinecultures team would like to thank the many volunteers and donors for their commitment and generosity!

Similarly, we had great support to raise funds for our new boat. After visiting our sponge farms, the gastronomic consultant Jürg Landert decided in 2016 to write to various known managers of a few successful Swiss companies. Soon after, the foundation for the urgently needed new boat was set at CHF 6,800. More donations followed and by the end of 2017, the Leopold Bachmann Foundation and our partner coralreefcare.com generously increased the donations. It was finally time to buy the new boat!

It was not easy to find a boat on Zanzibar that was both affordable and suitable for our needs. We had to search for a long time but are confident that with the new boat which has two new Yamaha four-stroke engines, we will be able to realise our ideas and plans. Among other things, we can now accelerate the coral reef monitoring and reforestation projects. Also, we can now undertake trips to the outer reef and further out into the Indian Ocean. The larger boat also gives our sponge farmers the opportunity to produce their own seedlings for their farms. Snorkelers take sponges from the breeding stock on the boat and the work can take place on deck in a saltwater pool. This saves time and money as scuba diving is no longer required for this step.

Does anyone have another great fundraising idea?
