June Highlights – A Glimpse into Our Daily Work at marinecultures.org

06.07.2025

June was a busy month for us – and to give you a little insight into our day-to-day work, we’d like to share a few stories and moments straight from the field:

World Ocean Day – June 6

To mark World Ocean Day, we teamed up with Mr. Kahawa Hotel and several other organizations from Jambiani and Paje to organize a large-scale beach clean-up.

In addition to setting up a small info booth at the hotel, we also displayed our flags proudly in the sand. Then it was time to get to work: Although the beaches in front of the hotels appear clean at first glance, we ended up collecting bags full of trash – a clear reminder of how important these efforts continue to be.

Visit from Azam TV

The Tanzanian national broadcaster Azam TV visited us to film a report about our coral restoration program. Using drones and underwater cameras, they captured footage while our project manager, Ali Mahmudi, gave several interviews explaining how marinecultures.org works every day to support reef restoration.

The report will be broadcast in Swahili and will reach a wide audience across Tanzania and the greater East African region. We’re excited to see the final piece and will share it with you as soon as it airs!

Underwater Clean-Up

Every two months, marinecultures.org organizes an underwater clean-up in the lagoon of Jambiani. In June, it was time again: Together with local dive shops, we headed out into the lagoon with our boats, coordinated the dive areas, and collected debris from the seafloor.

By the end, we had pulled up a significant amount of waste – including fishing lines, ropes, nets, cement bags, and other debris. A huge thank-you to everyone who showed up and helped make our lagoon a little cleaner!

Marinecultures.org adopted by 7 cats

In the bushes next to our office, five tiny kittens were born — and their mother disappeared soon after. They quickly found shelter with us, and ever since, we've been caring for hungry little mouths and treating inflamed kitten eyes.

Just before that, we had adopted Lina, our official office cat, and we’re also fostering one more kitten for six months until it joins its future owner.

So yes — there’s definitely a lot of animal activity happening at our office these days!
