Oktober 2011 – Final breakthrough!

02.10.2011

Our endeavors to find a second sponge with a good commercial potential remain long time unsuccessfull. Beside the searching by scuba we started to search through the flotsam on the different beaches around Zanzibar. After hours and hours of beachwalks we finally found in the south some beautiful soft sponges - accurately like the sponges that can be found in the shops in Europe. Without any scuba equipment, just by snorkeling we finally find as well the living specimen in the shallow water near the shore.

The samples that we relocated to our farm recovered fast from the cuts and the transport. After the full regeneration of the skin the sponges can defend themselves very good against biofouling. This promises low maintenance in the farm. The processing of the sponge – that is determined by the microbial reduction of the cell material – last around 14 days and the final product is of nice quality.
