Crowns-of-Thorns Starfish monitoring in Zanzibar

02.08.2009
marinecultures.org launches a crowns-of-thorns starfish monitoring program in the laguna and reef of Jambani, Zanzibar.

Jambiani residents and fishers have witnessed the massive decline of fish and coral populations in recent years. This is a cause for concern, as many fishermen depend on the laguna and the adjacent reef as their primary source of income. Regular fishing outside of the reef is practically impossible as the type of boat necessary for such missions is not available.

During Phase 1 of the project, a first census of the crowns-of-thorns population is conducted in August 2009. In addition, members of the local NGO JAMABECO will be trained to monitor COTs populations. This is done in cooperation with Buccaneer Diving in Paje and other local diving organizations.
