October 2013 - New Project: No Take Zone

24.10.2013

In August the local committee of Jambiani’s fishermen has requested marinecultures.org for its assistance in establishing a 'No Fishing–' i.e. 'No Take Zone in the Jambiani lagoon. Fishery represents a major part of Zanzibar’s subsistence economy. However, catches are declining at a rapid pace and are often too small to cover even the fishermen’s families’ needs.  The fish stock in the lagoon is exposed to a particularly high pressure since the fishermen do not have access to boats that would allow them to fish in the open sea.

We are impressed by the fishermen’s own initiative. The long standing efforts on the part of marinecultures.org and other organisations are bearing fruit – “the message” has been received. We are more than happy to support this initiative, be it intellectually, physically or financially. After endless debates among the fishermen, the protection zone was marked with eight buoys. The ‚No Take Zone’ is not very large but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. It is now of great importance that the protection is actually safeguarded by the initiators. The number of fish within the protection zone has increased considerably within a few weeks of its establishment – if that’s not a success…
