Who we are

marinecultures.org

marinecultures.org is a small non-profit organisation based on the island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean, with its headquarters in Zurich. marinecultures.org is organised as an association and was founded in 2008. We are financed through membership fees, donations and project contributions.

Why We Are Committed

The overuse of the oceans leads to the destruction of the ecological balance. At the same time, coastal communities are losing their livelihoods. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of coastal residents while protecting natural resources.

What We Are Committed To

We want to preserve the diversity of marine fauna and create sustainable jobs by developing aquaculture. At the same time, we want to show the local population that there is a connection between the overuse of the oceans and poverty.

How We Are Committed

As an alternative to overfishing, marinecultures.org researches and develops ecologically sustainable aquaculture in close cooperation with the local population. We provide help for self-help.

Where We Are Committed

The focus of our activities is in Jambiani, a fishing village on the east coast of Zanzibar with around 9,000 inhabitants. We also run individual projects on other coasts of Tanzania and East Africa.
