Who we are
marinecultures.org
marinecultures.org is a small non-profit organisation based on the Zanzibar archipelago in the Indian Ocean, with its headquarters in Zurich. It is organised as an association and was founded in 2008. We are financed through membership fees, donations and project contributions.
Why we do this
The overuse of the oceans is destroying the ecological balance. At the same time, coastal communities are losing their livelihoods. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for coastal communities while protecting natural resources.
What we work for
We want to preserve the diversity of marine life and create sustainable jobs by developing aquaculture. At the same time, we want to show local communities that there is a connection between the overexploitation of the oceans and poverty.
How we work
As an alternative to fishing, marinecultures.org researches and develops ecologically sustainable aquaculture in close cooperation with the local community. We help people to help themselves.
Where we work
Our work centers on Jambiani, a fishing village on the east coast of Unguja island, Zanzibar with around 9,000 inhabitants. We also run individual projects elsewhere in Tanzania and East Africa.
