What is a Reef Star?
A Reef Star is a star-shaped steel structure used to restore damaged coral reefs. The structures are placed directly on destroyed or unstable reef areas, for example where storms or other damage have left behind only loose coral rubble. Because this rubble is constantly moved by waves, new corals can hardly settle and grow naturally.
The Reef Star stabilises the seabed and creates a solid surface on which new corals can grow. Small coral fragments are then attached to the structure. Over time, they continue to grow, connect with each other and gradually form a stable and living reef structure again. At the same time, new habitats are created for fish and other marine life.
This method is considered particularly effective because it is relatively easy to implement and can be carried out together with local communities. Reef Stars can make an important contribution to the regeneration of damaged coral reefs.
