Shortlisted by The project, CORAL FOR THE CLIMATE! CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM EXPANSION, ZANZIBAR has won this year’s  public vote in the “water” category on the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA). As a prize, the project will receive 30,000 EUR in funding from EOCA.

The coral reef restoration project aims to restore and protect the Mnemba Island house reef and is operated by Oceans Without Borders in partnership with marinecultures.org. Oceans Without Borders is a marine conservation program founded by &Beyond and the Africa Foundation.

OWB in action

This funding will allow Oceans Without Borders

  1. to grow more corals in the newly established coral farm on Mnemba
  2. to establish a community-owned artificial reef to reduce pressure on the current reef system and increase biodiversity in the northern region of Zanzibar
  3. to develop educational materials and conduct workshops with local fishermen, skippers and schools

Congratulations for this well-deserved achievement!
