Reef Balls for Kukuu on Pemba Island

On behalf of Mwambao we helped the community of Kukuu on Pemba Island to produce 50 reef balls. The local fisher committee was very motivated and is now trained to the extent that they can produce artificial reef structures without external help. Our job was the technical advisory and to assist Mwambao’s project manager and their local staff.

Mwambao’s goal for the reef balls in Kukuu is to supplement the permanent no-take zone they have established for fish breeding and to help with its demarcation boundaries. There are currently no plans to transplant farmed corals to the reef balls. The reef balls are well suited for the natural settlement of corals and serve as sanctuaries for marine live.
